The Australian Open tennis tournament has been and gone, where little bits of skill and luck again took centre court. Most of the players have different degrees of skill and those unlucky enough to meet Djokovic or Williams in the earlier rounds are likely to be more aware of the part played by the luck of the draw. Even though the victors may not agree, the main difference between them and the rest is a bit more skill and a lot more luck. That, too, is probably the same 'story' for growing old.
Adding years to your life requires luck. It's just like Grouch Marx said, 'Growing old is something you do if you're lucky'. And, of course, you need to develop some skills. And the good news is that there's plenty of help available for you to develop the skills that will probably increase your chances of becoming lucky.
There is, however, another requirement: whatever you're doing has to be fun. Most of the participants acknowledged that participating in the Australian Open was fun. A few ageing beauties (91, 92, and 93) assured me that fun was a feature of their days - if there was no enjoyment in an event, they couldn't be bothered engaging. One of the beauties told me (and laughed) about this experience she had.

She had, what she thought, was a great Christmas idea. She decided that, rather than buy presents for friends and relatives, she would enclose a cheque with her Christmas cards. So in each Christmas card, she wrote, 'Merry Christmas, and you can get your own present this year'. During her post-Christmas cleanup, she found a bundle of cheques she had intended including with the cards. She could see the funny side of the story and is probably still chuckling.
Another of the beauties told me the story of a fellow who went into a bar and ordered a rum and cola. When the barman delivered the order, the fellow said to the barman, 'Thank you. If only you knew what I have, you probably wouldn't have given me this'. The barman looked puzzled, as if feeling sorry for his customer, and asked what was it he had. The customer replied, 'Seventy-five cents!'
According to these beauties a good laugh can help to add fun. Could this be the reason Djokovic is called 'The Joker'?
